Why do you need Rent Receipts?

A House Rent Receipt is a documentary proof of the rent payment explicitly made by the tenant to the landlord. If you are a salaried employee in India, you are required to submit these rental receipts to your employer as proof in order to claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act.

Important HRA Rules:
  • If your annual rent crosses ₹1,00,000 (approx. ₹8,333/month), it is absolutely mandatory to report the Landlord's PAN number to claim exemption.
  • For cash payments exceeding ₹5000 per receipt, a Revenue Stamp must be affixed across the signature of the landlord.
  • You must also share a valid rental agreement indicating the name of the landlord, the tenant, and the rent amount.
